GUIDELINES FOR WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BECOME A MEMBER.
EXPERIENCE.
The NZPHGA Executive expects an applicant to have at least a few years of solid hunting experience including backcountry hunts. An applicant's experience should be sufficient that they would be sufficiently competent and confident to take a hunt leader role and to guide an older, experienced international hunter or an inexperienced hunter in varying terrain and to run a basic camp in the field including camp cooking.
Applicants should be fully competent in field skills including backcountry navigation, bushcraft, backcountry travel and survival skills. Applicants should also have good knowledge of NZ game animals and their habits and behaviours.
We don't expect applicants to bring guiding skills or to be fully proficient in caping animals, turning capes and preparing for salt, although prior experience in this is an advantage.
REFERENCES.
You'll need two written references. As the references are reviewed by the NZPHGA Executive Committee members as part of the membership approval process, they should illustrate your hunting experience, character and suitability for the hunting guide role.
To ensure credibility of your references, if possible these should ideally come from individuals who are known to the NZPHGA Executive members and are or have been involved in the guided hunting industry. Otherwise, preferably involved one way or another in the wider hunting sector and understand the hunting guide role.
If you don't know anyone within these criteria, then previous employers, etc. The more credible the referee and the more aware they are of the requirements of a hunting guide, the more weight they carry. We understand that not everyone has contacts that fit this criteria, so do your best.
PROFESSIONAL HUNTER ACADEMY.
A pass on the PHA course is required before Guide or Outfitter Membership is awarded. The Guides Course is focused on providing industry specific 'hunting guides' skills. For more information see NZPHGA Professional Hunter Academy.
